A Common Problem
Back pain is sadly very common. Up to 80% of the population will experience some lower back pain at some point in their lives. Unfortunately, it has been shown in studies that you are much more likely to experience pain in your back if you have previously experienced lower back pain. This therefore means you may well experience it again in the future.
However, try not to worry. By following these simple steps things may quickly resolve.
REDUCE THE INFLAMMATION
You will need to reduce inflammation has this can lead to selling and pain. to do this cool the area by wrapping a thin cloth around some frozen peas or ice cubes in a plastic bag. Then place the peas or ice cubes over the back pain for between 10 and 15 minutes. After this period of time remove them and repeat again after between 1 and 2 hours. Never place ice directly onto the sikin as this will cause injury to the area and just leave you with an additional problem to deal with!
Alternatively, you can use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. ibuprofen) to help reduce the levels of inflammation. Obviously, always read the label and speak to your GP or pharmacist if necessary.
Keeping some gentle movement in the area will stop joints from locking. Lying in bed for prolonged periods has shown to make back pain worse in the long term. Therefore, you should do some light activities that keep some gentle movement in the back throughout the day, such as going for a walk.
If your pain does not start to improve after three or four days you should seek advice from a qualified professional such as a chiropractor, osteopath, physiotherapist or your GP. If you are worried about your back pain or other symptoms, it is always best to speak to your GP.
