Neck pain (or cervicalgia) is a common. About two thirds of the population have neck pain at some time in their lives, with about 25% of women and 20% of men having symptoms at any one time (1). After back pain, neck pain is the most common cause of musculoskeletal pain.
Neck pain is commonly associated with dull aching sensation although it is not uncommon of this to be a sharp and shooting. Movement often makes this pain worse and the neck is usually tender to touch. Other symptoms associated with some causes of neck pain may include: numbness and tingling or pain down an arm; headaches; dizziness; light-headedness. With these symptoms it is wise to speak to your GP before seeking any treatment.
Causes of neck pain are numerous and often it is a combination of different things. A neck strain is often the reason for the problem to flare up, though a underlying conditions such as degenerative disc disease or cervical spondylitis can make the neck more vulnerable. Many people don’t know why their neck pain started; however, poor posture and sleeping position can play a part, while stress seems to make things worse.
